26th Jan 1950 the day when our constitution came into act with a democratic government system, when India got their own set of rules and regulations to run the country. This day India became an independent nation. On this day in 1930 INC (Indian National Congress) opposed the dominion of status offered by British Regime.
India achieved independence from British rule on 15th Aug 1947 following different independence movement but the main movement was Indian independence movement and civil disobedience movement, it ran under the control of Mohandas Gandhi as a non-violent act of protest against the British. India got their independence on 15th Aug 1947 as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as governor-general. After the independence the country did not yet have constitutional law instead it was working on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935. On August 28’ 1947, the drafting committee was set up to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr B.R. Ambedkar as chairman.
Independence day is celebrated because we got freed from the British rule and the republic day is celebrated because we got free from British constitution. Both have their respective importance in the history and the present. The committee submitted a draft to the constituent Assembly on 4th November 1947. The Assembly sat on an open to public session for 166 days, over a period of two years. After all the changes and suggestions the constituent assembly became the parliament of India under the transition provision of the new constitution.
This day is celebrated with a parade function organized by ministry of Defense. This is held at the Indian capital New Delhi. The marching starts from the gate of the Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President’s residence), Raisina hills on Rajpath past the India Gate, this is the main attraction event of Republic day celebrations lasting for three days. The parade shows the ability and armed equipment of the military and military vehicles. The function also showcases the cultural and social heritage. Nine to twelve different regiments of the Indian Army in addition to the Navy, Land and Air force with their bands march with their official decorations. The Indian President take the salute of all the officials as the president is commander-in-chief of Indian army.
In this prestigious celebration of India many foreign delegates gets invited to see the event with the President and the prime minister. UK and France are two countries who got invited 5 times.
There is another ceremony that is held officially after denoting the end of Republic day festivities, known as Beating Retreat ceremony. This is conducted on 29th Jan, on the third day in the evening. It is also performed by the military bands Air force, Land force and Navy force, at the same spot from north block to south block. The Chief Guest is President of India who gets escorted with the PBG cavalry unit. The commander asks the unit to give the national salute, followed by the National anthem Jana Gana Man.
